Compiles a checklist of Iraq’s lizards using published records, museum material and field information. The paper reports 50 species belonging to 27 genera and seven families, with distribution notes covering different parts of Iraq. It provides a reference for lizard diversity and recorded occurrence at the time of publication.
Records evidence of wild mammals at more than 20 sites in Sulaymaniyah, Erbil and Duhok, using photographs, tracks, droppings and other field signs.
*Nesterov’s monitor (Varanus nesterovi)* was formally described in 2015 from museum specimens collected in 1914. The specimens came from Byara, now in Halabja Governorate, and near Nawtkhana in Diyala. Named after its collector, P. V. Nesterov, this rarely recorded lizard was recognized as a distinct species a century after its collection.
