It is a nocturnal and crepuscular species and is occasionally active during the day, even at low temperatures. It digs burrows, usually with several entrances, containing nesting and food storage chambers. This species does not hibernate and remains active throughout the winter. It is a solitary species. It is omnivorous, feeding on roots, shoots, seeds, and fruits. It may also prey on snails, insects, and occasionally reptiles, amphibians, and small rodents.
