It is active throughout the day and night. It lives in burrows that it excavates itself or that are constructed by other rodents. Most digging activity occurs in spring and autumn. The burrows have multiple entrances and several food storage chambers. It lives in family groups with its offspring. Individuals may move to a new site during the night if their burrow becomes unsuitable. It is an omnivorous species, and its diet mainly consists of seeds, cereals, green vegetation, insects, and mollusks.
