It is a medium-sized newt with yellow or white spots of varying sizes on its body. It inhabits brooks and streams in mountainous areas of Erbil and Duhok Governorates, above 1,000 m a.s.l. Females lay eggs singly or in groups under stones and on roots in the water. Water pollution and the alteration of water sources for human use are the main threats to this species in the Kurdistan Region.
