It is a nocturnal species. It digs burrows in the soil or rests in shelters under rocks and is an excellent climber. It is generally solitary, with low population density and a small home range of less than 20 meters. Males are aggressive toward each other during the mating season. It is omnivorous, and its diet mainly consists of seeds, cereals, acorns, insects, mollusks, and bird eggs.
