It is a nocturnal species. It is both fossorial and arboreal, with excellent climbing and jumping abilities. It builds nests in burrows, trees, or under rocks. The burrows usually have several entrances and contain nest and food storage chambers. It is generally a solitary species, although several individuals may huddle together during winter to conserve heat. It is omnivorous, and its diet mainly consists of seeds, fruits, acorns, buds, and invertebrates.
