This species is nocturnal and rests in underground burrows during the day. The burrow typically has a plugged entrance, a nesting chamber, and often ends with an emergency exit. It undergoes hibernation during the winter. This species is solitary, a fast runner, and an excellent jumper. It is herbivorous, feeding mainly on green vegetations, roots, bulbs, stems, and seeds.
